"Proud and shy at the same time, they bear the best things alone." This is how the poet Oscar Levertin described the Swedes around the turn of the last century. But in the spring of 2020, when the coronavirus swept across the world, it turned out that being alone was not just about the best things. Even the worst things, the Swedes preferred to carry alone. While country after country shut down society to curb the spread of infection, Sweden chose a different path. The responsibility for not spreading an insidious and deadly virus was instead placed on the individual. During the pandemic it turned out that Swedes gathered around the campfire, gazed at the sunset and told each other ghost stories.
